Walt Whitman Principal John Murphy proudly introduces his December Athletes of the Month Rosa Portaro and Jordan Roiland.

For Men’s Foil Fencer Jordan Roiland, this, his senior year is a culmination of all the hard work and effort that he and his team have been building on. “Fencing is such an amazing sport and the team is so cohesive,” said Jordan. “Last year was truly a rebuilding year and we put a lot of really hard work into it.”  The team had pretty good results last year but it’s not what they wanted and the guys are looking to make a statement this year. Jordan is having a breakout season and along with his ‘family’ of fencers, are putting their hearts into every practice and every match. As of press-time Whitman is in first-place in the county and will be hosting the Suffolk County Championships on February 4.  Jordan is the President of DECA, Secretary for Mathletes, and a Section Leader in the Marching Band, as well as on the Yearbook Committee and the Men’s Badminton team in the spring.

Our Women’s Athlete for December is Rosa Portaro.  To have a season she is having after missing all but the last game of last season due to a torn ACL, you know she gives everything she has for every minute she’s on the floor. Rosa, one of this year’s co-captains, has been one of League II’s leaders at the three-point line. “Hitting those ‘threes’ really makes me happy to be back and playing with the team this year,” said Rosa. “The team works really well together and gives a lot of effort, in practice and our games.” As of press-time Whitman has an overall record of 7-2 and yet sits in the middle of the standings in a very competitive League II.  Rosa is a member of the Girls Leaders Organization, The National Honor Society, and the World Language Honor Society. She has always been involved in various science clubs and will take her love for the sciences to college next fall to enter a Nursing Program.

Congratulations to both of these outstanding student athletes.
