As part of our Walt Whitman Students of the Month recognition, we have our Athletes of the Month as well.  The month of October highlights our exceptional golfer Scott McEntee, and our Varsity Women’s Soccer Team.

“We have a young golf team this year and everyone progressed a lot,” said Scott McEntee, a Whitman Junior. Scott represented Walt Whitman and League III in the Suffolk County Finals recently and is awaiting his final results to see if he made the cut for next spring’s Long Island Championship. "Scott is an amazing athlete,” said Coach Labate.  “His passion, dedication and desire to improve his golf game is inspiring. Scott sets an excellent example for the younger players on the team, building character through golf etiquette.”  When he’s not teeing off, Scott can be found at numerous Whitman extracurricular activities including the Debate Club; the Paw Print School Newspaper, where he’s a section editor; and the Chamber Orchestra, where he plays violin, to name a few.

The Women’s Soccer Team had a super season and played incredibly tough in the playoffs, ultimately loosing to the Suffolk County Champions, Northport. “Our team battled like warriors,” said Varsity Head Coach Mike Moccia. The team got further than expected as they beat a tough team in Smithtown East in the first round. “We were the only team in the conference to hold the County Champs scoreless,” said Moccia, speaking about the Northport game that ended in penalty kicks after two scoreless overtime periods. “We have twelve seniors on the team, so these kids have been around a while and this is the first time in six years we made the playoffs, so they were hungry, we had two close games already with Northport, and the girls were determined to beat them on their own field.”
