Whitman Freshman Quinn O’Hara hadn’t been a pressure situation like this, but he knew what to do and his pass to big brother Colin, a Whitman senior, proved to be not only the right move… but the game winner as well. Colin scored his second goal of the day off that assist from Quinn; this one, with 1:57 remaining in overtime would take his team to the next level of playoffs.

Varsity Head Coach Bob Howell was trilled with the outcome and coincidence of that final overtime score. “This win over Commack started two days before when we had our best two practices ever,” said Coach Howell. “The intensity, the commitment–it was all there–everything was clicking.”  But the win wasn’t with out its scare. Commack, an excellent team in transition, scored 4 goals in the fourth period to go up by one with Whitman tying it before regular time expired.  “Shane Brennan had an absolutely outstanding day for us with 15 saves,” said Howell. “An offensive player knows what he wants to do, but the defensive player has to anticipate and react, it’s a very tough position and our guys were really on their game.”  “Offensively, Willie Petro played his best game of the year, and it couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Howell of his senior clearing midfielder.

Beating a very good Commack team 8-7 brings today’s ultimate test.  At 5PM the Wildcats will face off against the #1 seeded West Islip Lions.  The Wildcat community is encouraged to come out and support their team. Go Wildcats!
