The Whitman Science Bowl team won matches against Jericho, Huntington, and the Stony Brook School before being eliminated by Farmingdale in the Department of Energy's Regional Science Bowl at Brookhaven National Lab.  The powerhouse Farmingdale team went on to win the Regional Competition and will move on to the Nationals this year.

The Science Bowl is a “Jeopardy!” style competition featuring topics that range from astronomy to physics and math to biology. “I am so proud of the determination and competitive spirit of our team,” said Department Chair Marcus Maddy.   “This is the first year our students competed in this division (last year’s team competed in the STEP Farmingdale Regional Division and won that competition, going on to the Nationals). We beat a couple of excellent teams, but ultimately we lost to the strongest team."

It was a great learning experience for everyone. As an added bonus, Whitman graduate Amanda Horn, now a graduate student and educator at Brookhaven National Lab, spent time with our team discussing grad school and STEM career paths.
