We were thrilled to learn that our very own Walt Whitman senior, Derek Lap, has been selected as the lead alto saxophone player for the Suffolk County Music Educators All-County Instrumental Jazz Orchestra. This prestigious honor is a fitting tribute to Derek's considerable talent and remarkable work ethic. “This is something I’ve been working at and trying to achieve for a long time, so it’s a nice accomplishment, especially as I finish off my senior year,” said Derek, who is in the final stages of choosing a college for next year. Cornell, Northeastern and Stony Brook are his top three. “I’m looking to study finance or Actuarial Science,” said our multi-talented student.  Derek has been playing the saxophone for the past seven years and, in the hectic pace of being a high school senior, finds a welcomed place. “When I’m playing its a way to relax, no matter what’s going on, I can always come here [Whitman’s music room] hang out, relax, and play.”

Derek is a member of the Nassau/Suffolk Jazz Ensemble, he recently completed an Internship at USDAN, he’s a member of the Whitman Wind Ensemble, National Honor Society, and Whitman’s Chorale and Voices to name a few. “I find is amazing to see the positive effects music has on our students,” said Whitman’s Band Director Allan Deitz. “Derek is so immersed in the world of music, and has been since the 4th grade, and here he is going off next year to major in Actuarial Science. The power of music and the positive effect it has on our kids is extraordinary.”

We congratulate Derek, as well as the wonderful teachers and his supportive parents who have contributed to his success.
