Andrew Peers Memorial Wrestling Tournament

On Saturday, December 5, hundreds of wrestlers weighing between 99 and 285 pounds descended upon Whitman’s North Gym for the 21st Annual Andrew Peers Wrestling Tournament.

Top performers for the Wildcats were champions Thomas DeGaetano who won a 4-1 decision against rival Tylynn Lukens from North Babylon in the 106-pound class. Kevin Romano in the 120-pound class won with an 11-2 decision over challenger Justin Flynn from Sachem East, and Terron Robinson in the 285-pound class was able to take a 7-3 decision against a tough competitor in Kevin Wilkinson from West Babylon.

Whitman wrestlers also joined the winners podium in the following weight classes: In the 113-pound class Anthony Constantino took 4th; In the 120-pound class, teammate Javier Dubon came in 5th; In the 126-pound class Ed McGuian came in 3rd and Justin Savage took 6th; In the 132-pound class Luke McEvoy took 6th place; Wrestling at 145-pounds, Elvin Campos took 3rd place and Christian Villanueva took 4th place. In the 195-pound class Rodrigo Abrego took 4th and Damani Schum took 6th place; In the 220-pound class Devin Marion took 4th place; and finally in the 285-pound class Patrick Brady brought home the 3rd place medal.

Congratulations to the entire Wildcat wrestling team, who open their home season against Bay Shore on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at 6PM in Whitman’s South Gym.

The Andrew Peers Memorial Tournament is named in memory of 1988 Walt Whitman graduate Andrew Peers, who was killed in an auto accident in 1994. Andrew was one of Whitman’s most spirited and accomplished athletes in the 1980s. He won All-League honors three times and was All-County in his senior year for wrestling. Andrew was also an accomplished lacrosse attack man, garnering All-League honors.
