All-County Halfback Tyrese Betts was genuinely honored when he was told about becoming Athlete of the Month for October. “I think it’s pretty awesome,” said Tyrese. “I was speechless because I haven’t gotten an award like this and it’s nice to be recognized.” Tyrese, who dominated Whitman's turf field, as well as the 100-Meter in Spring track, will be attending Buffalo State next fall where he will be playing Division II football for the I-90 Bowl Bound Bengals. “Tyrese is probably one of the best all-round offensive players I’ve coached here at Whitman,” said Varsity football coach Robin Rosa. “He can throw, run, and block, I think he will do really well at the next level.”

While playing football at the next level excites Tyrese, he will clearly miss Whitman. “When I wake up in the morning I look forward to coming here,” said Tyrese of his high school. “The people are nice, they have good hearts, and it makes for a great atmosphere.”

Emily Fung has just clinched a spot to compete in the State Swim Meet and has recently posted her best time in the Backstroke. Section II rules indicate that for a high school to qualify as an official team they must have 8 members and Whitman has five. There are many swimmers like Emily who are members of an outside club like Team Suffolk, in Emily’s case. “Swimming relaxes me,” said the soft spoken sophomore. “It keeps me focused, keeps me going. Its great for time management because we practice 6 days a week, our season goes all year except for 2 weeks off in August, so you need to be committed and focused to do well.”

Emily is a member of the Art and the World Language Honor Societies, and like her male counterpart, loves the atmosphere at Whitman. “Everyone is very supportive and understanding here,” said Emily. “The teachers are great and everyone is very friendly.”

Congratulations to two exceptional young athletes!
