Countrywood art teacher Ms. Carol Davis and her 2nd-grade art students have been busy studying the life and work of famous artist Henri Matisse. Matisse was born in France in 1869. Before he decided to become an artist he was a lawyer.

At the age of 21 he became ill with an acute attack of appendicitis and was bed ridden. His mother gave him a set of paints to give him something to do while recuperating. He then realized that he loved to paint and decided to pursue this in a more serious way.

Matisse is known painting and collaging in many styles. He created many paintings of fish bowls showing patterns in the background. The projects you see in this photo are studies of patterns and still life. Countrywood students created both fish bowls and flower vases on colorful patterned backgrounds.

“Truly, Mr. Matisse would have been proud of our creative paintings you see in this photo,” said Ms. Davis. “I think they are spectacular.”
