Walt Whitman’s Girls Independent Swim Team is having a good season, and all five athletes are practicing diligently for the upcoming County Championships.  The squad is led by sophomore captain Emily Fung.  Juniors Casey McKenna and Jillian Leydon, along with Stimson Middle School eighth graders, Michelle Franco and Dana Keogler, balance the team nicely.

Because Section XI requires a minimum of 8 athletes per school to be considered a team, you won’t find Whitman listed in league standings, but our girls, nonetheless, embody all the true characteristics of teamwork and swim at individual Section XI swim meets representing Whitman in the process.  Swimmers compete in races that range from 50-meter to 500-meter in distance, each perfecting their skills in the Butterfly, Backstroke and Freestyle.

All five athletes practice and compete on club teams, as well as representing Walt Whitman High School.  Emily, Casey, Michelle, and Dana all swim for “Team Suffolk” and practice at Half Hollow Hills West High School.  Jillian Leydon swims for the “Huntington YMCA Bluefish” and practices at the Huntington YMCA pool.  Emily Fung, Jillian Leydon, and Michelle Franco have qualified to compete at the County Championship meet on November 7th at Suffolk Community College.

WAY TO GO GIRLS!
