It was a low scoring, gritty, and physical game between the two neighbors. But it was Half Hollow Hills East who jumped out to an early 13-9 lead in the first period. “They out played us physically in the first quarter,” said Varsity Head Coach Dan Trebour.

Both Whitman and Hills East are better defensively than they are offensively, and the Wildcats defense finally began to shut their opponent down allowing only 4 points in the 3rd period. “I told the girls during a time-out to think of each possession as one which they are not allowing Hills to score, and to take it one possession at a time. I told them to lock it down and play gritty defense.” Seems like the team got the message loud and clear. Clawing their way back, the Wildcats overcame their first half deficit with 13 points. Rose Pedretti won a hard fought layup with 44 seconds left to give her team a 29-28 edge, and strong defense prevailed. The icing came when Rosa Portaro found herself at the free-throw line making both shots with 14 seconds left.

The Wildcats are young with only two seniors, so as they grow together eventually they will be that senior group, eliminating mental mistakes inherent in a young team. “We’re going to have to really fight for shot at a playoff spot, so this game was hugely important to us,” said Coach Trebour in the Wildcat’s 31-28 win.

Rose Pedretti led the Wildcats with eight points and eight rebounds. Rosa Portaro added six points, Brittney Coleman scored five points, Camilee Getchell and Sarah Olsen each contributed four points and Alexa DelColle and Jesse Mora each added two points in the win. The Wildcats are presently 3-2 in Suffolk’s League II.
