"The best part was hearing the doctors talk about the passions they have for their jobs,” said Thao Williams.

What’s it like to be at the cutting edge treatment for brain and spine disorders today?  On December 8, Eleven Whitman students had the opportunity to find out, when they shadowed physicians, nurses and lab technicians at North Shore LIJ’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute as the second part of the LI STEM Hub SPARK! Challenge.

Students actually had the opportunity to perform one of the most critical neurological diagnostic tests: an EEG, a test which picks up electrical activity from the brain.   They witnessed a mock epileptic seizure, and brainstormed the process of diagnosis and treatment with surgeons.  It was an impressive experience. “They were immensely enthusiastic,” said Kabir Zafar.  “It was so organized and informative,” said Lauren Connolly.

The project is not over.  Students will play their experience forward by visiting the Silas Wood 6th Grade Center in January to create an in house “Hospital for a day” for the 6th grade students.

Overall, what did the students think of their experience?  “It is an amazing facility full of people who truly care about their job and genuinely want to help their patients.  The best part was hearing the doctors talk about the passions they have for their jobs,” said Thao Williams.

Participating students: Russell Kielawa, Kabir Zafar, Thao Williams, Karthikeyan Mayllvahanan, Theodore Fisher, Sonia Bhardwaj , Julianna Pasquarello, Nicole Naughton, Diana Ortega, Ahmad Ejaz, and Lauren Connolly.
