Whitman Principal Kathie Acker, congratulates her November Athletes of the Month.

Our November Athletes of the Month were both responsible for outstanding individual effort while playing in a sport where team unity is paramount to success. Playing on the Varsity Girls Volleyball team, senior Samantha DeGaray had a busy month as she closed out her high school volleyball career by setting a personal and school season record of 699 Digs. Samantha was voted All-League by Suffolk County coaches two years in a row and hopes to continue her love for the sport in college next fall. Samantha is active as a Peer tutor at Whitman and also volunteers time teaching volleyball at Stimson Middle School.

Witman Hernendez Fernandez is a junior at the high school that sounds too much like his first name. When it comes to soccer, Witman needs no introduction. This soft-spoken young man lets his play on the field speak for him, and it speaks volumes.  His soccer talent is a force to be reckoned with. His All-County award this past week put a cap on a highly successful season, one that took the Wildcats to the County Championship game against the eventual New York State Champions.  Witman is always around soccer, but there are moments when he’s thinking beyond his field of dreams. This past fall he attended the Latino Leadership Conference at Stony Brook University and broadened his network, as he prepares himself for his senior year at Whitman and the likelihood that college is going to be a part of his future.

Congratulations Samantha and Witman on your well earned recognition.
