Second grade students recently completed an author study on Tomie dePaola.  The unit began by reading Strega Nona, one of dePaola’s most beloved characters.  Students enjoyed the humor and also hearing the Italian words that were infused throughout the book.  The last pages that depicted Big Anthony eating all the extra pasta brought lots of laughter to the library!  Reading continued with more of dePaola’s works; some classes enjoyed Big Anthony: His Story, while others read The Baby Sister.  Drawings, puzzles, and a Strega Nona video were among the various enrichment activities.  The final week of the unit concluded with a visit to two accompanying web sites, one of which was Tomie’s of course!  The children loved his photos and learning some trivia about his life.
