Our male Athlete of the Month for April is Whitman track star Shamar Powell. For Shamar, the 84-foot length of Whitman’s basketball court is a drop in the bucket, so when spring track starts up, he’s in his groove, running from 400 meters to 2 miles and everything in between. “I’ve come real close to several personal bests this past season,” said Shamar. “Our 4x400 meter relay was the fastest that Coach Conroy has ever had in his 19 years of coaching.”

An interesting note is that Shamar is a member of Coach Conroy’s fastest 4x800 from last spring. This year’s 4x400 team consists of Shamar, Gerald Riley, Dan Wilson, and Jordyn Guerrero. They posted a time of 3:25.92.  “Shamar is the whole package,” said Coach Rob Conroy. “He’s intelligent, multitalented, possesses a strong work ethic, and has a great personality.”

Our female Athlete of the Month for April is Carrie Simone. All-County for the past 3 seasons, Carrie was back on the badminton court setting a new Walt Whitman record this past April, when she surpassed 50 career wins. “This is the very first time in Whitman girls badminton history that this milestone has been reached,” said girls badminton coach Mr. Scott Wolff. “Carrie is a super-talented badminton player.”

Carrie finished her high school career by setting the bar even higher, with 63 career wins and All-league status. Carrie enjoyed a solid final season by defeating the Long Island singles champion twice in regular play. Carrie’s Wildcat team competed in the county finals for the fourth time in the past five years, coming up short to county champion Half Hollow Hills. Carrie will be attending the State University of New York at Albany, where she will major in accounting.
