March is National Athletic Trainers month and our very own Mr. Peter White received a proclamation from the Huntington Town Board recently. Who is Peter White you ask? While most district employees probably have no idea who he is or what he does, ask any athlete, or any parent whose child plays a sport at Whitman, and they will tell you that having such an accomplished athletic trainer is a welcome addition to the district.

As an athletic trainer for a school district as large as South Huntington, Mr. White finds himself heading in many directions to cover sporting events. Mr. White works closely with student athletes in the prevention and care of athletic injuries. New York State’s ranking system of “risk of injury” helps him determine where he needs to be and when. Collision sports like football, field hockey, lacrosse, and wrestling are number one, contact sports like soccer and basketball are number 2, and noncontact sports like track, volleyball, and badminton are number 3.

Students and parents who have questions for Mr. White are welcome to contact him at the training office in the north gym, through the district athletic director’s office, or via email at PEwhite@shufsd.org

Congratulations Pete White!
