Walt Whitman Senior Christopher Olberding has been honored for his exemplary service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The Presidential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama granted this award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country.

Walt Whitman Administrators nominated Chris this past fall in recognition of his volunteer service with the Wildcat Wrestling Program and the Wildcat Summer Sports Camp. “At first it was just volunteering, but the more I did it, and the more I thought about it, I enjoyed helping out with the kids,” said Chris.  “I felt that if I helped out more then that would up the wrestling program for the future.”  Chris has also volunteered at St. Elizabeth’s Church. This community minded senior will be heading off to the Maritime College next fall to study Engineering.

“The recipients of these awards demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial.

Thank you Christopher Olberding for recognizing that volunteerism is an important part of life and that your contributions will help motivate others to contribute to our South Huntington community.
