Hello All:

I am sure that you are all aware of the recent carbon monoxide tragedy at the Walt Whitman Shops.  This terrible news reminds us of life’s fragility and makes our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the victims.  The incident has also generated some very reasonable questions regarding the prevalence of carbon monoxide detectors in our school buildings.

The South Huntington School District has carbon monoxide detectors in all areas that include equipment, which burns fossil fuel (such as boilers and hot water heaters). These detectors are inspected by three different agencies, including the New York State Insurance Reciprocal, Hartford Steam, and the Fire Department, throughout the year.  We hope this information helps with any questions that might exist in our school community.

Be well,

Dave Bennardo
