On Thursday, January 16th, high school and primary students gathered for a bilingual literacy event at Oakwood and Countrywood Primary Centers. Walt Whitman students from Mrs. D'Addario's Spanish classes visited kindergarten, first-, and second-grade Dual Language classrooms for a very special Spanish story time.

The high school students wrote their own original Spanish children stories that were creative versions of traditional tales, including beautiful illustrations.  They worked in groups of 4 or 5 for a week and then created their professional big board books in the computer lab. Their assignment also included developing assessment activities and games for the younger children to participate in after listening to the story.

Countrywood and Oakwood Dual Language students were very excited to participate in this special story time, and thoroughly enjoyed the stories and activities created ‘just for them!’ They gathered in small groups to listen to stories and answer questions in English and Spanish from their high school ‘teachers’. They practiced their Spanish listening skills in a fun and meaningful way, and even came up with their own questions for the authors.

A special thank you to Ms. Cecilia Blanco, South Huntington’s ESL/DL Coordinator, Ms. D'Addario, and the other Walt Whitman World Language teachers for making this a special time for everyone.  Congratulations to the following Whitman students who are listed alphabetically based on their class:
