The Walt Whitman wrestling season is officially open. On Saturday, December 14, hundreds of wrestlers weighing between 99 and 285 pounds descended upon Whitman’s North Gym for the 19th Annual Andrew Peers Wrestling Tournament. While the weather outside was frightful, it was warm and toasty inside as the competition moved seamlessly through the day to a late afternoon completion.

Top performers for the Wildcats were champions Joe Calderone and Vin Feola. Second-place finishers were Hekmat Naeemi and Terhon Legros. Finishing in third place were Anthony Feola and Terron Robinson.

Congratulations to the entire Wildcat wrestling team, who open their home season against Connetquot on January 3, 2014, at 6:45 PM in Whitman’s South Gym.

The Andrew Peers Memorial Tournament is named in memory of 1988 Walt Whitman graduate Andrew Peers, who was killed in an auto accident in 1994. Andrew was one of Whitman’s most spirited and accomplished athletes in the 1980s. He won All-League honors three times and was All-County in his senior year for wrestling. Andrew was also  an accomplished lacrosse attack man, garnering All-League honors.
