November Athletes of the Month

She sets herself free, running up hills, over bridges, and through wooded fields. Senior cross-country runner Lauren Hoffman is able to leave it all behind, concentrate on what's in front of her, and win. She has won All-League 1st team, All-Division 1st Team, and All-County.  “I love the sport, and I find peace when I run,” said Lauren, who will be running the 3,000- and 1,500-meter in winter track and her favorite steeplechase in spring track. Also garnering Athletic Director Jim Wright’s Hero Award at the recent sport awards celebration, this All-American girl likes to up the ante, frequently training with the boys, never giving up, and always looking ahead. That’s why Lauren Hoffman is our November Female Athlete of the Month.

Few can contest our Male Athlete for the month of November. Many can clearly recall the opposing teams’ coaches’ and administrators’ looks of amazement as he stopped everything that came his way. They said what we already knew; Dan Zagorski is a rock star. Dan and the rest of the Walt Whitman Varsity Soccer team gave one of the most memorable season performances in recent history. “It was all about chemistry,” said the All-Conference goalie. “Chemistry is everything in sports, especially soccer, and we had great chemistry both on and off the field.” Dan will graduate this June, but he will never forget the fall of 2013. “We won our first home playoff game in 17 years, and it’s a memory I will always have.” To all those who watched this young man’s self-assurance tested on the soccer field, there is no doubt that he deserves to be our November Male Athlete of the Month.
