Birchwood Goes the Distance

Ms. Correll, left, seems unfazed by the warm sun in Hartford, as Ms. Michaelian keeps warm just before the start of her marathon run in New York City.

We recently were able to catch up with two of Birchwood’s finest. Fall is always a busy time for runners, and Ms. Elizabeth Correll and Ms. Annie Michaelian were busy in separate events

Ms. Correll, a fifth-grade teacher, ran in the 20th ING Hartford marathon in Bushnell Park, Hartford, CT, on October 12. There were 2,707 participants, and she finished #469 with a time of 3:39:18, her fastest marathon yet! We are proud of her accomplishment. Despite some aches in her quadriceps, Ms. Correll is at full strength and ready to run another!

Ms. Michaelian, Birchwood’s assistant principal, was a finisher in the NYC Marathon on November 3. It is one of the largest marathons in the world, with 50,304 finishers this year. The race is organized by the New York Road Runners Club and, with the exception of 2012 (thank you, Super Storm Sandy) has been run every year since 1970. Averaging just over 10 minutes per mile, Ms. Michaelian's time of 04:31:00 made her the 28,682th finisher out of the over 50,000 who finished the race.

Congratulations, Ms. Correll and Ms. Michaelian. Your dedication to marathon running is eclipsed only by your dedication as outstanding educators.
