Darwin Hernandez is passionate about soccer, and it shows on the field. September was an excellent month for this Whitman senior, and his teammates and the Whitman soccer community are hoping it continues right through the playoffs. “The teamwork makes soccer so much fun,” said Darwin. “This year during tryouts and summer camp, the team started hanging out together and getting to really know each other. That’s helped our play on the field.” In the Northport game, both teams were knotted in a 2-2 tie when Darwin netted the game winner with 15 seconds left in double overtime to keep his team unbeaten. And while Darwin is highly deserving of being our male September Athlete of the Month, he would be the first to remind us of how important team play is and what a difference it makes. Congratulations, Darwin Hernandez.

Junior Christina McFelia and her field hockey teammates are enjoying a successful season so far. Christina has been at the top of the Newsday charts in goals scored for the month of September “I’ve been working at this for a really long time—since the fourth grade actually—so it feels good to get recognition for all my hard work,” said Christina. For those who have never seen field hockey, it is a fast-paced, skill-oriented game, requiring dedication and stamina. Christina has plenty of both, and that has gotten her named female Athlete of the Month for September. In the off-season, Christina, an accomplished flutist, can be found performing in the pit orchestra and the wind ensemble. Her love for music, language, and sports has earned her spots on the Music and World-Language Honor Societies.
