The year is 1958, and Walt Whitman High School is starting its second year under its new name. Paul H. Bennedict is the district superintendent, or district principal as they were called in those days, and LLoyd B. Spahr is the high school principal. Wham-O introduces the Hula Hoop, and over 100 million are sold. VISA and American Express cards are introduced, the average annual income is $4,650, and a gallon of gas will set you back 24¢.

Life has changed a great deal in the past 55 years and five Whitman varsity cheerleaders probably would have never imagined that they would forever remain close friends.

Even though they all currently reside in very different parts of the country, these five cheerleaders still get together to this day, and just this past spring, they struck a familiar pose. From left to right: Mildred De Rosa-Chilton (Texas); Dorothy Nicholas- Williams (Florida); Kathi Rossi-Renz (South Carolina); Carol Foran-Apkarian (Arizona); and Cathy Lobasso-Tignor (Virginia).

Thank You Ms. Barbara Mosera for bringing this wonderful story to our attention.
