TOPSoccer held their final game of the spring season on Whitman’s turf field, and the evening was special in many ways. For those who don’t know about this wonderful team, they are part of the St. Elizabeth CYO Soccer Club, and TOPSoccer is a program designed to meet the needs of children with physical and/or mental disabilities.

This picture perfect Saturday evening had parents, student volunteers, coaches, and players enjoying what has become an increasingly popular team. One of the highlights of this particular Saturday was the awards ceremony, emceed by Coach Ed. To the delight of his audience, Coach Ed Nitkewicz launched into a monologue that had everyone smiling from the inside out and his special players basking in the spotlight.

A special award was given to Whitman senior Christopher Vital.  TOPSoccer Coach Ed Nitkewicz honored Christopher with a $1000 scholarship. Christopher, a Principal’s List student, has been volunteering his time with TOPSoccer for the past four years and will be attending the University of Connecticut in the fall.

This year the team will see Coach Ed retire from his TOPSoccer coaching position, but he will continue to keep in regular contact with the program. Ms. Christy Gudaitis is the team’s coordinator and she would like the community to know that TOPSoccer always makes room for more players, so if you think your child would enjoy the camaraderie and fun of this heart-warming program, considers this your invitation to TOPSoccer.

For anyone who would like more information or to help out with the team they should contact Christy Gudaitis at cgudaitis1@optonline.net

WHAT IS TOPSOCCER?

TOPSoccer (The Outreach program for Soccer) is a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with special needs.

The TOPSoccer program is designed and administered by US Youth Soccer, and its volunteer TOPSoccer committee provides meaningful learning, developmental, and physical participation opportunities to these young athletes through the game of soccer.

TOPSoccer is a modified version of the game of soccer, designed to provide opportunities for special-needs children ages 4-19. It provides a very affordable opportunity for fitness, fun, and building self-esteem.

• Modifications are made to the game to allow full participation and enjoyment to each child.

• One-on-one assistance is available to those who need it.

•It offers a recreational, leisure approach to the game of soccer.

• TOPSoccer is coordinated through your local soccer community organization.
