Sixth-graders at Silas Wood kept the community service wheel turning right till the end of the school year with a ‘toiletries for the veterans’ drive that netted boxes of personal care items that were delivered to the Northport Veterans Hospital this past Monday. The students and staff brought in a variety of toiletries that was part of their Silas Supports Veterans Memorial Day celebration.

As part of our Memorial Day remembrance, Silas Wood has kicked off their final fundraiser of the year. Silas Supports Veterans! We are asking the students to donate toiletries that will be given to the Northport VA Hospital that is utilized by many local veterans.

We are running this event from May 28-June 7.

On Friday, May 24, as many were preparing for the long weekend celebrating Memorial Day, 6th graders at South Huntington’s Silas Wood School were honored with a visit by three local veterans from the Vietnam War.

The veterans are all members of the VFW Post 1469, Nathan Hale Post, located on Pulaski Road in Huntington Station. Army Engineer Robert Blake was a six-year Army veteran and spent one year in Vietnam. VFW Post Commander Bruce Brenner was in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971 as a member of the US Army Infantry and also spent some time in Cambodia. Butch Jensen, was in the US Army 1st infantry division and spent 12 months just north of Saigon.

The three veterans shared with the students their experiences as well as some mementos and photographs from their service.

In his message to South Huntington employees on Friday, Superintendent Dave Bennardo took a moment to reflect on the importance of the holiday. “As we embark upon this Memorial Day weekend, let's also take a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy the blessings of liberty,” said Superintendent Bennardo.  “We certainly have a great deal for which to be thankful.”
